The McConnell Dowell Diona Joint Venture is thrilled to announce the extension of our contract with SA Water as part of the utility’s capital delivery program, which will see our partnership continue until 30 June 2028.

This extension will enhance our collaboration with SA Water as we engage further upstream in the program lifecycle, applying our knowledge and expertise to plan, create, and optimise the program, providing long-term value for SA Water and the South Australian community.

MDJV Framework Manager, Marc Doyle commented; “SA Water’s capital delivery program is integral to securing a sustainable and resilient water future for South Australians and MDJV is proud to be a trusted partner in delivering these essential services. We remain committed to driving value for money across the program through a focus on safety, innovation, environmental sustainability, and positive social and economic outcomes.”

With significant investment in water and wastewater infrastructure to support South Australia's growth over the next four years, we look forward to a busy period filled with opportunities for our team and the community to participate in challenging and transformative projects that will benefit South Australians for generations.

Mario Russo, Managing Director of McConnell Dowell Australia, expressed his gratitude, saying, "Congratulations to our team, and a heartfelt thank you to SA Water for extending our partnership. Collaboration is at the core of our business, and the success of SA Water’s 2024-28 capital delivery program will be testament to this teamwork. McConnell Dowell's parent company, Aveng Limited, released robust year-end results for financial year 2024, with a return to profitability and positive cash generation.

Aveng also announced that, after a strategic review, it intends to pursue, through a combination of transactions, the creation of two independent and separate entities: McConnell Dowell (including Built Environs) and Aveng Limited: which holds Moolmans, a tier 1 contract mining business operating in sub-Saharan Africa.

In the case of McConnell Dowell (including Built Environs), this will involve exploring a potential listing on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

A potential listing on the ASX would be expected to improve McConnell Dowell's ongoing access to capital to facilitate continued growth of its service offering, for the benefit of customers.

There is no intended change to the fundamental way the business operates, nor the way in which the business interacts and conducts business with its customers, partners or suppliers.

Aveng has appointed advisers, including Macquarie Capital, to assist with the implementation process.

We're using the latest in gaming technology to place marine plant in a virtual environment and replicate its real-world capabilities.

The tool enables our teams to simulate methodologies and iterate the positioning of plant and equipment around the design models. This is all done in a realistic environment with features such as accurate bathymetric data, reality capture point-cloud models, and real-world tide levels.

It's not an Olympic gold but it sure feels good to be the winner of this Sustainability Excellence Award. ?

Last night in Sydney we were celebrating at the Australasian Railway Association (ARA) Rail Industry Awards, with our Western Program Alliance (WPA) awarded the win for the Mt Derrimut Road Level Crossing Removal Project.

WPA is one of the several Alliances removing dangerous level crossings for the Victorian Government’s Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP). WPA is made up of McConnell Dowell, LXRP, Mott MacDonald, Arup, V/Line and Metro Trains Melbourne.

Sustainability features on the award-winning project prioritised comfort for the public transport users and surrounding community in a changing climate, installing pavement cooling paint, solar bus shelters and a green roof.

Ports of Auckland Breakthrough

The first siphon constructed in Auckland and the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

McConnell Dowell is proud to announce the completion of the Ports of Auckland Outfall Upgrade project for Auckland Council Healthy Waters, delivered on time on November 1, 2024, with a positive safety record and within budget.

From the outset, McConnell Dowell in collaboration with designer GHD, played a key role in the concept design and optioneering phase, which involved:

  • Engaging with key stakeholders, including Auckland Transport, Auckland Council, KiwiRail, Port of Auckland Limited (POAL), bus company, local businesses, and residents.
  • Analysing multiple design options.
  • Researching historical data on the original construction of the port.
  • Proposing a final solution that would meet the client's needs.

This final solution selected by the client, a trenchless inverted siphon (U-shaped pipe), developed by McConnell Dowell and GHD which addressed the client’s primary objectives.

This solution enabled the installation of a 3-meter diameter, 270-meter long stormwater pipeline at a maximum depth of 20 meters with a 0.5% slope.

Despite challenges such as working below sea level, tight spaces, adverse weather, and unexpected events, the team fostered strong collaboration from the project’s inception. This collaboration between all parties—Auckland Council Healthy Waters, designers GHD, Port of Auckland Limited, and other stakeholders—enabled the team to overcome these challenges and ensure smooth progress.
