The Port Kembla construction team has successfully delivered a project with a highly complex and multidisciplinary scope, showcasing exceptional coordination and expertise across various fields.
McConnell Dowell’s scope of work included the construction of a new wharf, revetment, quay wall, nine dolphins, wharf furniture, main equipment foundations, and marine loading arm platform structures.
Once operational, the facility will have the capacity to supply 500TJ of gas per day—enough to meet nearly all of New South Wales’ gas needs on a peak day. This new terminal will play a key role in supporting domestic gas supply as Australia transitions to renewable energy.
Key Statistics and Major Accomplishments
- 4.5 km of trenching for earthing cables and electrical and instrumentation conduits
- 500 m³ of concrete foundations poured
- Complex crane lifts executed for the installation of Marine Loading Arms, Fire Monitors, and other mechanical equipment
- Over 60 electrical pits, including one mega pit
- Nearly 2,500 meters of cable ladder installed
- 9,000 meters of conduit installed, with nearly 54 km of cables run
- Over 60 tonnes of structural steel installed

We are pleased to announce the successful completion of the 2.4km jetty structure as part of the Mardie Salt & Potash Marine Structures project. This achievement was made possible by utilising our owned and operated canti-traveller system, which allows construction to proceed above the water, significantly reducing impacts on the diverse marine environment below.
The project has been a key driver in advancing our construction methods, delivering new efficiencies in jetty development while setting a high benchmark for safety controls through the implementation of innovative temporary works solutions.
Our team is now transitioning to the next phase of the marine scope, which includes utilising barges for piling and large module installations.
Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.
