On the Wyndham Vale Stabling Yard, which we constructed for V/Line, we initiated a trial of recycled plastic composite sleepers manufactured by local company, Duratrack® .
This substitution reduces embodied energy of materials and provides a significant improvement to the sustainability footprint of the project. Approximately, 4 tonnes of plastic have been recycled and saved from the landfill for this trial. Sustainability benefits include equivalent design life, full recyclable at the end of the asset life, reduced carbon emissions from manufacture and transport distances.
This trial will provide evidence for the opportunity for these sleepers to be used in future works for both V/Line, MTM and other rail operating authorities.
