This multi-disciplined brownfield project included the design and construction of civil, structural, track, overhead, signalling and station works over a 1.6 km site on Melbourne’s Pakenham/Cranbourne lines.
The removal of the crossing and the new Premium Station has greatly improved the daily commute and public safety for thousands of road and rail users, and has provided a catalyst for a vibrant centre for the Springvale community.
The Challenge
The Alliance had two major interim milestones that could not be changed: the closure of Springvale Road for 10 days during September 2013; and a major five-day rail occupation during the 2014 Easter long weekend.
The Solution
Meticulous planning for rail occupations and road closures allowed the works to be completed successfully within the allowable timeframes and involved daily coordination planning and communication between disciplines, i.e. civil, structures, station and rail teams. A master program was used to identify construction activities and identify any risks. As a result, the Alliance achieved zero unplanned disruptions, and all road and rail occupations were handed back to operators on time.
Key to Success
MTM and VicRoads were embedded in the Alliance, holding key roles on the Management Team and with engineers integrated into the construction team, allowing for collaborative and proactive engagement with all key stakeholders and the community.
