McConnell Dowell's building brand, Built Environs, was the Managing Contractor for the Modbury Hospital Upgrade – one of the most complex hospital redevelopments undertaken in South Australia.
This program of work was focussed on improving access to patient care and enhancing the design of the hospital to meet contemporary needs and models of care.
The project has delivered clinical upgrades to high priority areas, as well as key infrastructure and building services upgrades. The upgrades included refurbishment within the existing buildings and new build works.
Infrastructure priorities included façade remediation, seismic structural upgrade and building services.
The project was a fast-tracked, multi-staged delivery within a live hospital environment. 100% of the 13,000 m2 work in scope was directly above, beside or below operational hospital areas.
The hospital and associated health services remained operational throughout construction. Careful planning, staging and consultation with local hospital stakeholders was key to mitigating disruption.
Extensive electrical, mechanical, medial gas, hydraulics, and fire services infrastructure upgrades were undertaken. The project team utilised point cloud surveying to coordinate new works with the existing services and structure within the hospital.
The project was completed on time, within budget and with zero unplanned disruption to hospital operations.
The project was awarded a Professional Excellence in Commercial Construction Award at the 2022 SA Australian Institute of Building (AIB) awards.
