The McConnell Dowell Mechanical Division has been engaged by Eke Panuku to fabricate and install a new Jump Platform at Karanga Plaza, as well as provide additional swimming improvements within the area.
This high-profile project builds on Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown’s commitment to return prime waterfront land to Aucklanders and create vibrant public spaces for everyone to enjoy.
This project will tie into the Karanga Plaza seawall balustrade works that the Mechanical Division fabricated and installed between 2021 and 2022. The team is thrilled to come back and see to the seawall being completed in its entirety as part of the Harbour Pool Pilot project.
The project scope includes:
- A new pre-cast concrete jumping platform beside the Tidal Steps.
- Upgrading the existing balustrade on the seawall to enhance user safety.
- Installing piles and pontoons to separate jumpers and swimmers from vessels using the navigation channel.
- Transforming the existing pontoon to include a saltwater pool at the base of the Tidal Steps.
- Installing a grab rail on the adjacent pontoon to provide floatation support.
- Adding street furniture to form a 'waiting zone' for swimmers.
- Installing changing facilities and toilets.
The worksite was established in late July, with concrete breaking activities already underway. There is also a flurry of activity in the background with the balustrades being fabricated at the McConnell Dowell Plant Yard in Puhinui.
We expect the saltwater pool to be opened to the public at the end of the year, in time for the summer break.
