McConnell Dowell played a key role in the construction of the stunning Apple Store at The Marina Bay Sands (MBS) in Singapore. Entirely surrounded by water, Apple MBS offers uninterrupted 360-degree panoramic views of the city and its spectacular skyline through its all-glass dome structure.
McConnell Dowell's scope in bringing this architectural wonder to life included marine-based and onshore construction.
Our main scope of works included:
- Design and construction of a temporary water retaining cofferdam to facilitate construction
- Demolition of the existing South Crystal Pavilion glass, steel and concrete structure to the seabed
- A subsea tunnel connecting to the basement of the MBS mall (Shoppes @ MBS)
- Design and construction of a new three storey concrete building, including a widened tunnel
- Waterproofing the multistorey reinforced concrete structure
- Construction of a sheet piled water retaining cofferdam around an existing structure.
As the project was built within a busy and iconic commercial location, creating several challenges for our team to overcome.
There was no land access to the worksite for construction equipment and materials, so all equipment and materials required were mobilised via a marine vessel from an offsite staging area.
It was an accelerated program with only 15 months for construction. And finally, to minimisation disruption to the businesses at the Marina Bay Sands shopping mall, the McConnell Dowell team undertook extensive and ongoing stakeholder engagement and relationship management.
