 The Australian Defence Force (ADF) awarded McConnell Dowell the contract for new hangar infrastructure at the Taliai Military Camp (adjacent to Fua’amotu International Airport), on Tongatapu in late 2025.

Our on-island piling, pavement and concrete batching teams were perfectly positioned to start work on new concrete foundations to support an Air Wing hangar for the camp, so construction began in October.

 The scope includes:

  • a new 200mm thick reinforced concrete slab on 450mm of crushed coral aggregate,14 footings and edge beams for an Air Wing hangar;
  • a new 120 mm thick reinforced concrete slab on 450mm of crushed coral aggregate, including edge beams and mowing strips for the refuelling services;
  • demolition of the existing boundary fence, new secure temporary boundary fencing, and its removal once the project is completed.

The project is scheduled for completion in early 2026.
