Meet “Piper" she is the latest addition to our line up of tunnel boring machines (TBM). Piper has been refurbished from the TBM used on our world record-breaking Army Bay ocean outfall project for Watercare. She will carry out a similar Direct Pipe® drive through 2km of farmland on the Snells Algies wastewater pipeline and outfall project in Auckland.
Piper was named by enthusiastic students from neighbouring Snells Beach School, the year 3 and 4 students were invited to provide a female designation for the machine in keeping with TBM naming traditions. Pipe-r is a clever play on words and was voted the best name by the children. They also provided painted hand print designs that will be applied on Piper to “lend her a hand on her journey”.
